ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

DIPLOMA IN DANCE THERAPY TRAINING

About the Diploma in Dance Movement Therapy

The Diploma training in Dance Movement Therapy is a two-year part-time training that offers a pathway toward practising as a Professional Dance Movement Therapist.

After the two-year training, you will receive a Diploma in DMT, and you will also have completed the requirements for registration as a provisional member of the DTAA (Dance Therapy Association of Australasia) and be able to practise professionally.

You must complete both years to practise as a Dance Therapist, however you may opt out of the training after the first year, if you choose, receive a ‘Certificate in DMT’ and still apply the principles of DMT to an existing scope of practice and/or lead therapeutic group dance sessions.

WHO IS OUR TRAINING DESIGNED FOR?

This first year is designed for those who are interested in developing skills to work in the field of dance movement therapy in the future, or those who would like to integrate therapeutic dance into an existing related profession. Counselling, psychotherapy, psychology, teaching, occupational therapy and physiotherapy are some other fields which dance therapy skills and tools can be integrated into. It is also ideal for creative arts therapy trainees who wish to specialise in dance movement therapy as part of their training.

The second year prepares students to practise more clinically and individually, and to gain the required practise and supervision hours to be able to apply for professional registration as a DMT with the DTAA (Dance Therapy Association of Australasia).

Professional Membership

After completing both years of the Diploma in Dance Movement Therapy, graduates will be eligible to apply for Provisional Membership with DTAA (Dance Therapy Association of Australasia). Once accepted into the DTAA, graduates will be able to work independently in the field of Dance Movement Therapy, gaining Full professional membership with DTAA once reaching required supervised work experience hours.
